Learn About Free Speech at Our Philly Museum

Learn About Free Speech at Our Philly Museum

What does it mean to truly speak freely? In an increasingly outspoken, polarized era, voices clash and opinions divide. Throughout it all, however, the concept of free speech remains both a treasured right and a contentious battleground. We believe in the power of this fundamental liberty; that’s why the National Liberty Museum serves as a beacon for exploring the enduring struggle for expression throughout history. Our dynamic space is not just a space for artifacts of antiquity; it is a crucible for dialogue that bridges the past and the present. We hope to see you at our Old City, Philly museum or on a virtual tour soon, but in the meantime, let’s explore free speech in-depth right here, right now.

Learn About Free Speech at Our Philly Museum

Nestled in the heart of historic Philly, our museum isn’t your run-of-the-mill museum experience —it’s a vibrant hub for celebrating civil liberties and free speech in exciting, interactive ways. Our one-of-a-kind collection weaves historical debates and struggles for freedom with current events and culture, creating a challenging, engaging tapestry that challenges our visitors to reflect and think critically. Currently, we are in the midst of the Year of Free Speech, a dynamic and highly relevant exploration of all things related to artistic expression, press freedom, and civil discourse.

As part of the Year of Free Speech at NLM, you can experience Free Speech: Our Right, Our Responsibility. Through interactive displays spanning multiple historical eras, visitors discover freedom of speech’s historical and philosophical roots and role fueling societal progress.

A Space for Differences

At the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, we have never shied away from difficult subjects that can court controversy. We believe that an essential part of freedom of speech is its universality, so we pride ourselves on giving a voice to diverse perspectives. At NLM, you aren’t being preached to or told what to think. Our role is simply to challenge, educate, and inspire our visitors from all walks of life.

Explore Historical Figures in Free Speech

Through one of our signature permanent exhibitions, Heroes from Around the World, we herald the historical figures who have paved the way for free speech in our nation and abroad. Through engaging narratives, we celebrate trailblazers who left an indelible mark on the history of liberty. Icons like Nelson Mandela, Anne Frank, and Felix Zandman are given voice anew, their stories resonating through exhibitions designed to inform and inspire. By highlighting these extraordinary individuals, we seek to illuminate the undying importance of freedom of expression, and those who fight to preserve it for all.

A Space for Artistic Expression

In Word Powered: Exploring Free Speech Through Art, we have curated a diverse group of multi-media artists from around the globe whose work examines the relationship between censorship, freedom of expression, and the world of art. With contemporary art that provokes, interrogates, and explores the ever-changing nature of expression, and the vital role that the freedom of speech plays in that dialogue.

The Role of Advocacy and Education

In a world where the challenge for equal rights is as fierce as ever, the National Liberty Museum serves as a platform for advocacy and the protection of civil liberties. Within our walls, deeper understanding and meaningful conversations are sparked. Our commitment to the ideals of liberty is ingrained into every exhibition, aiming to inspire visitors to become champions of their own rights, as well as the rights of others. Every NLM visit becomes a call to action—to stand up, speak out, and effect positive change in society. In a digitized, globalized world where voices can echo across continents with the mere flick of a finger, the value (and challenges) of free speech are only further amplified.

Visit NLM and Experience Free Speech

The cornerstone of the National Liberty Museum’s mission is to foster dialogue and promote a deeper understanding of civil liberties. It is here that freedom transforms from an abstract concept into a living, breathing philosophy that is meant to be challenged and debated. Through our dynamic programming and unique collection, the NLM invites people from all walks of life to engage in conversations that might be uncomfortable—yet ultimately enlightening. It is in these vibrant exchanges that we find the path toward greater empathy and unity.

In an age where free speech is more relevant than ever, a visit to NLM is not just timely; it’s essential. Don’t wait; secure your tickets to our Philly museum today.
